Your rashi is the sign the Moon was standing in at the moment you were born. It is not the sign of the Sun that newspaper horoscopes use, so for many people the two are different. To find yours, enter your date, time and place on the Rashi Calculator.
Why the two signs differ
Western astrology measures the zodiac from the spring equinox (the tropical zodiac). Indian astrology measures it against the fixed stars (the sidereal zodiac). Because the equinox slowly slips against the stars, the two zodiacs are now about 24° apart. That is almost one full sign, so a person whose Sun sign is Leo in a newspaper is often a Cancer Sun in the Indian count.
The Moon is treated the same way, so your Vedic rashi can also differ from the Western sign of your Moon. This is why a rashi calculator needs the real sky, not a table of dates.
Why the birth time matters
The Moon takes only about two and a quarter days to cross a sign. On the day the Moon changes sign, the time of birth decides which of the two signs is yours. If you do not know the time, the calculator takes the Moon at midday and tells you when your sign may be the neighbouring one.
What your rashi is used for
The rashi is the starting point for several things in Jyotisha:
- Daily reading. Today's planetary positions are counted from your Moon sign, which is how the transit method of Phaladeepika (chapter 26) works. See your sign on Aaj Ka Rashifal.
- Your nature. Saravali (chapter 23) describes the Moon in each of the twelve signs.
- Matching and periods. The Moon sign and its star set your first dasha and are used in marriage matching.

दोनों राशियाँ अलग क्यों होती हैं
पश्चिमी ज्योतिष राशिचक्र को वसन्त सम्पात से गिनता है (सायन)। भारतीय ज्योतिष इसे स्थिर तारों के सापेक्ष गिनता है (निरयन)। सम्पात तारों के सापेक्ष धीरे-धीरे खिसकता है, इसलिए आज दोनों राशिचक्रों में लगभग 24° का अन्तर है। यह लगभग एक पूरी राशि है, इसलिए अखबार में जिसकी सूर्य राशि सिंह है, भारतीय गणना में उसका सूर्य अक्सर कर्क में होता है।
चन्द्रमा के साथ भी यही होता है, इसलिए आपकी वैदिक राशि आपके चन्द्रमा की पश्चिमी राशि से भी भिन्न हो सकती है। इसीलिए राशि कैलकुलेटर को तारीखों की तालिका नहीं, वास्तविक आकाश चाहिए।
जन्म समय क्यों ज़रूरी है
चन्द्रमा एक राशि पार करने में केवल सवा दो दिन लेता है। जिस दिन चन्द्रमा राशि बदलता है, उस दिन जन्म का समय तय करता है कि दोनों में से कौन-सी राशि आपकी है। समय पता न हो तो कैलकुलेटर चन्द्रमा को दोपहर का लेता है और बताता है कि आपकी राशि पड़ोसी राशि कब हो सकती है।
राशि किस काम आती है
ज्योतिष में कई बातें राशि से शुरू होती हैं:
- दैनिक फल। आज के ग्रहों की स्थिति आपकी चन्द्र राशि से गिनी जाती है, जैसे फलदीपिका (अध्याय 26) की गोचर पद्धति में। अपनी राशि आज का राशिफल पर देखें।
- आपका स्वभाव। सारावली (अध्याय 23) बारह राशियों में चन्द्रमा का फल बताती है।
- मिलान और दशा। चन्द्र राशि और नक्षत्र पहली दशा तय करते हैं और विवाह मिलान में काम आते हैं।
